If you’re looking for inspiration take time to look at other designers. It’s easy to find information online just putting in a name on a search engine will give you plenty of inspiration to work from.
Of course it also depends on the type of jewellery that you are interested in. It could be that you want to create a beautiful necklace or bracelet or that you would like to make smaller items such as earrings or broaches. Take a trip to your local charity shops and bric-a-brac sales for jewellery, buttons, beads and bits that you can use to create your own personal pieces. Trips to the beach collecting shells and pebbles can offer up a host of delicate designs for you to play with.
Many designers take inspiration from the cultural environment around them. Here in Australia we have a wealth of cultural inheritance to take inspiration from. Take a look at a few designers and their websites;
Johnmillerdesign.com – John Miller uses ideas and inspiration from the environment to create beautiful pieces of jewellery that are ultimately unique.
Simonewalsh.com – Simone Walsh creates stunning pieces from sterling silver, gold and precious gemstones.
Sources of inspiration
Checking out fashion magazines and articles can provide you with a great array of ideas for jewellery making projects. You can get a good idea as to what is currently on trend in the fashion world, this will help you keep up to date with designs and help you to sell your products if that is what you ultimately intend.
Some designers focus simply on one type of material for their designs, they may use only metals to create their pieces or perhaps they create items that are made with fabrics or gemstones. It may be that a particular designer creates a collection with a theme throughout the designs for that season. This could be a very useful idea to take on when creating your own designs; you can then focus on several designs at one time using materials that complement each other.
A great example of this can be found on the websites of great designers such as Tiffany and Co, Bulgari and Buccellati among others. It is worth mentioning that some designs are better suited to some materials better than other. For example, a necklace may look better made from silver than it would when made from beads.
I wrote this article with the intention to open your mind to the other source of inspiration, other designers who are already successful at what they do. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery and so you should not be afraid to recreate what others have done, and introduce your personal twist.
